A Change of Group, the Same Commitment

Dear Residents,

I have taken the decision to leave the Labour group and join the Liberal Democrat group.

When I was elected, I promised to work hard for our communities, ask questions, speak up when things are not right and hold the council to account. That commitment has not changed.

Over recent months it has become increasingly difficult for me to do that within the Labour group. On a number of issues I felt it was important to vote in the interests of residents rather than simply follow a party position, and that made my position within the group untenable.

There have been times where I have spoken against the administration, called in cabinet decisions and voted differently to the rest of the party. I did not do that lightly. After a lot of soul searching I believed it was the right thing to do for the people I represent, and I stand by those decisions.

This decision has not been taken lightly, but I believe it allows me to continue doing the job I was elected to do and to be properly supported in doing so.

The Liberal Democrats at Flintshire County Council are a strong and constructive voice within the council. They share my belief that politics should be about improving people’s lives, tackling inequality and supporting working families.

Most importantly, my focus remains the same as the day I was elected. I will continue to be a strong voice for Brynford and Halkyn and work hard for the wider Flintshire community.

Of course, as always, I am happy to discuss this with any member of community should you wish to ask anything further.
