To help residents understand the proposed extension to Halkyn Quarry, I've put together a step-by-step guide to the phases of work in the applicant's Method of Working plans. Use the player below to see where rock would be dug out and where the tip would be moved, in the order shown on the plans.

Planning application FUL/001040/25 · Flintshire County Council

This is a proposal. At the time of publishing, the application had not been decided. Check the planning portal for its current status.

A step-by-step guide to the phases of work proposed for the north and north-west extension of Halkyn (Pant-y-Pwll-Dŵr) Quarry. It shows where rock would be dug out and where the tip (overburden mound) would be moved to, in the order shown on the applicant's Method of Working plans.

This is not an official document. It is an independent, simplified guide to help residents understand the proposal. It was not produced or checked by the applicant or Flintshire County Council. The planning application documents are the authoritative source. Where this guide and the documents differ, the documents are correct. The map is simplified and not to survey accuracy. The plans give no dates or durations for the phases, so none are shown here.

About this guide

What it shows

Each step matches one drawing in the applicant's Method of Working Plans (drawing 24-8-3316, Parts 1 and 2): a starting position in January 2025, then Phases 1 to 11, followed by a simplified look at restoration.

The wording quoted for each phase is taken from the drawing. Volumes and figures have been left out, and the plans contain no timescales.

The coloured areas are traced from the drawings. The background map is simplified and is not to survey accuracy.

Where the tip goes

The written statements describe the tips as overburden mounds: heaps of soil and waste rock left from earlier quarrying.

"…remove the majority of these mounds and re-shape the remaining soils into screening mounds along the northern and north-western boundaries… the remaining soils from the overburden mounds will be put back into the void itself along the benches which have been worked, largely along the western side, and used to form ramps within the quarry void."

Environmental Statement Introductory Chapters (Rev B), paragraphs 2.5–2.6. The new screening mounds are not shown on the Method of Working plans, so they are not animated here.
